Will jobseeker increase

The rise in job seekers is insufficient to meet the expanding legal and housing needs.

When the coronavirus supplement is phased out at the end of March, JobSeeker payments will be permanently increased by $50 every two weeks. This constitutes a meager $3.57 a day increase, and it coincides with a tightening of rigorous mutual obligation rules.

Because of the higher incidence of Jobseeker, vulnerable individuals in our neighborhood will be forced to survive on $44 per day. We, like many other community service groups, think that this is an insufficient reaction to the continued economic and social effects of COVID-19, as well as the growing levels of poverty and inequality in our community.

We are profoundly worried about vulnerable individuals of our community being forced to choose between paying rent, food, bills, medication, and healthcare, which may have terrible consequences for their mental health and wellness.

Housing, food, and health care are fundamental human rights to which all members of our society must have access. The consequences of failing to address our community's rising rates of poverty, unemployment, and disadvantage will be felt in our justice and health systems, with more individuals at risk of homelessness, deteriorating mental health, and legal problems as they fight to satisfy their fundamental requirements.
