An internship is a professional learning opportunity that provides meaningful, practical work in a student's subject of study or career interest. An internship allows a student to explore and enhance their profession while also learning new skills. It allows the company to bring in fresh ideas and enthusiasm, cultivate talent, and maybe construct a pipeline for future full-time workers. A good internship:
A part-time or full-time work schedule with no more than 25% clerical or administrative activities is required.
For the work experience, provides a detailed job/project description.
Introduces the student to the company, its culture, and the suggested job project (s).
Assists the learner in developing and achieving learning objectives.
Regularly provides feedback to the student intern.
What is the difference between an internship, a co-op, and a research experience?
Internships are organized learning experiences in a professional context that enable students to get significant job experience in their subject of study. Internships must last at least 120 hours (typically, at least 10 hours per week during the fall and spring and either part-time or full-time during the summer).
Co-ops are paid employment in which students alternate semesters between full-time labor and full-time academic study for at least two semesters. After graduation, students are often, but not always, granted full-time work with the organization. Co-ops are not widespread at UMBC, although some students are interested in them as a form of practical learning. If you are interested in a co-op, we suggest contacting with one of our staff members to create a framework for the experience that would work best for our students.
There are research possibilities both on and off campus. These opportunities provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity to better understand a student's academic interests and examine how graduate school may play a part in future routes. These experiences may be funded by organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Student Interns Should Expect:
To get real-world job experience and contribute meaningfully to the organization. They refuse to be gophers!
Having a mentor who gives direction, feedback, openness, and professionalism.
gaining knowledge and talents in a certain subject
to make professional relationships
To obtain experience with senior management.
They will be given an orientation to the firm where they will be interning. This teaches the student to the organization's objective and goals, as well as corporate rules, regulations, and processes. It also exposes the intern to other staff to whom they might turn if they have any questions in the future.
The Advantages of Hiring an Intern:
Regular workers' workload will be reduced.
Allow staff to concentrate on higher-level activities.

Students should be given opportunity for hands-on learning.
Take use of students' technological and social media knowledge.
