Why You Should Apply for That Job You Think You Won't Be Able to Get

Why this is significant:

According to Mohr, job candidates are seemingly uninformed about how the recruiting process works; most recruiters are seeking for someone who is confident they can fill the post effectively and can explain why and how. Mohr adds that "advocacy, contacts, or a creative method to portraying one's knowledge" might compensate for not meeting all of the job posting's criteria.

Furthermore, this is a gendered behavior. Mohr's research supports the oft-quoted claim that males apply when they satisfy 60% of the criteria and women only apply when they meet 100%. According to Mohr, the problem is not a lack of confidence on the side of women, but rather a lack of understanding about how individuals may connect with excellent positions. While women are trained to obey norms, Mohr contends that males understand that "disruptive" conduct is beneficial in the business and aren't hesitant to use it when it benefits them.

Applicants are at a competitive disadvantage if they see job advertisements as absolute lists of criteria. Silicon Valley recruiter Scott Purcell, for example, told Quartz that the prerequisites in a job post are normally a wishlist, and that candidates with the majority of the mentioned talents and a proven work history are usually considered competitively.

What this means to you:

This is not to argue that falling six years short of the minimum experience or missing relevant work experience would result in your application being rejected; rather, those who believe they are a good match for a position are typically competitive candidates even if they do not satisfy every criterion. Because the recruiting process is more flexible than job searchers believe, candidates who avoid taking risks are at a disadvantage in their careers.

Nonetheless, with the job market still languishing for young people and new grads, the suggestion "you're simply not applying enough" is difficult to take. With so many talented individuals still unemployed, many firms may still cherry-pick the finest candidates for lower pay.

If the economy continues to improve (or, more optimistically, accelerates its recovery), job searchers will no longer have to jump through so many hoops to obtain consistent and productive work. Meanwhile, while you're still seeking for work, it won't hurt to apply to a few high-paying positions.
