Why do so few individuals achieve professional success?

When you fail to become anything on purpose, you unwittingly become anything, and that "anything" often leads to extreme degrees of suffering.

There are several reasons why so few individuals achieve work success, including equating achievement with career success and following a career path determined, forced, or propelled by others such as parents, friends, spouses, and so on. Another reason why so few individuals achieve professional success is because they seldom take the time to define what success means to them. They fail to analyze what a life of pleasure, serenity, and happiness would look like for themselves, and they surely fail to measure or define what job success would entail.

Instead of having a great job, many individuals end up stumbling into one or choosing a position that they hope would lead to happiness and then spending an unusual amount of time moaning about their circumstances after being profoundly disillusioned. People feel disillusioned when the job they find does not provide the required mix of experiences (financial, professional, and personal satisfaction) that they expected.

Other reasons why so few individuals achieve job success include:

They have one or more crippling concerns and are hesitant to take professional chances that may lead to new possibilities.

They believe they have no capacity to improve their circumstances, or they believe they have no viable choices or options since each decision entails a sacrifice they do not want to make.

They are trapped waiting for others to generate employment possibilities for them, whether it's their friends, bosses, or other corporate executives.

They are very concerned with pleasing others, so they put off their own needs and then complain about it afterwards, and sometimes too much.

They lack tenacity and the capacity to endure in the face of problems and challenges in life and in their careers. When confronted with—and forced to overcome—barriers, they give up too readily and become unduly deflated.

They attempt to hide their fears and vulnerabilities by boasting about how much they don't need anybody else, and as a result, they refuse to seek for assistance. As a consequence, individuals who might otherwise assist them are pushed away.

They have a victim mentality that hinders their potential to achieve. As a consequence, they lack the capacity to learn and, more crucially, unlearn when required.
