Is jobseekers allowance the same as universal credit

Jobseekers Allowance 'New Style'

Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) is a benefit for those who are jobless or working fewer than 16 hours per week and are looking for employment.

'New Style' JSA is a weekly payment that may be claimed alone or in conjunction with Universal Credit (UC).

To be eligible for 'New Style' JSA, you must have made national insurance payments for a particular number of years, usually two full tax years before to the year you are claiming.

If you meet the criteria, you may be eligible for 'New Style' JSA for up to 182 days. Following that, your job coach will discuss your alternatives with you.

If you are eligible for both 'New Style' JSA and Universal Credit, any 'New Style' JSA will be included as income for Universal Credit.

When claiming 'New Style' JSA, your savings and capital (or your partner's savings, capital, and income) are not taken into consideration. However, your salary and any pension payments you get may have an impact on the amount you receive.
