Please keep in mind:
If you are of working age or part of a couple who are both of working age, you cannot lodge a new claim for income-based Jobseeker's Allowance. If you wish to file a fresh claim, you will almost always have to claim Universal Credit instead. If your circumstances change, you may also need to apply for Universal Credit.
If you are a mixed-age couple (one working and one retired), if you are not getting Pension Credit and wish to make a new claim, you must apply for Universal Credit. See our'mixed age couples' support page for more details.
If you inform us you are presently getting income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, we will calculate how much you are due. We will also provide what you would be entitled to under Universal Credit on the results page if you are qualified, so you can understand how shifting to Universal Credit may influence your benefits.
The information below is still applicable to persons who are currently receiving income-based Jobseeker's Allowance.
What exactly is it?
Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) is a payment provided to those who are unemployed (or only work part-time) and actively looking for job.
JSAs are classified into two types: contribution-based and income-based.
JSA based on contributions is paid for up to 6 months, but only if you made adequate Class 1 National Insurance payments while working. Even if your spouse works or you have funds, you can obtain it. The calculator will determine if you are eligible for contribution-based JSA.
Income-based JSA is payable if you have not made enough Class 1 National Insurance payments, if you were self-employed, or if your contribution-based JSA is no longer available. In rare situations, it may also supplement contribution-based JSA. It may be paid for as long as you continue to follow the regulations.
If you get JSA (income-based), you may be eligible for assistance with the payment of your mortgage, house loan, or rent. If you qualify for housing cost assistance, the calculator includes the entire amount of any assistance that you are entitled to (albeit there may be a 'waiting period' at the start of your application for housing cost assistance). More information may be found at housing assistance.
Can I have it?
You can no longer file a new JSA claim (income-based). The calculator will determine if you are eligible for contribution-based JSA.
How can I make a claim?
You can no longer file a new JSA claim (income-based). More information on claiming contribution-based JSA may be found on the GOV.UK assistance page on how to claim JSA.
