Job Search Strategies

Treat it as though it were a real interview.

The hiring agency will most likely schedule an interview with you to better understand your talents and expertise. Treat this interview as if it were an interview with a corporation. Dress correctly and arrive on time—preferably early. Listen carefully and use positive body language to demonstrate your interest and attentiveness. With a solid handshake, introduce yourself. Bring a CV and be prepared to answer typical interview questions. You may also be required to do a skills exam to evaluate your hard abilities, so be prepared.

Be truthful.

Be truthful about your objectives, whether they be to acquire a permanent employment, preserve flexibility, or build skills that will make you an appealing candidate for your future full-time work. Also, be straightforward about your availability. Tell the recruiter at the recruiting agency if you are only available on weekdays, for example. Finally, be truthful about your work history. Tell the recruiter if you have a job gap, for example. He or she can assist you in determining how to explain this to a potential employer.

Maintain an Open Mind

Even if you desire a full-time employment, you should be open to temporary or contract work. These may assist you with developing abilities that will be valuable when applying for your future full-time employment. If you impress a potential employer, he or she may attempt to hire you full-time.

Following Up

Send an emailed or handwritten message thanking the staffing agency interviewees for their time and reinforcing your desire in finding a job.

Be Patient and Persistent

If you apply for a job via a hiring agency and haven't heard back within a week, follow up. Maybe you weren't the ideal match for that particular position, but a recruiter may be able to discover something else that does. Once a week, call any employment firms you've contacted to remind them of your interest and exhibit your willingness.

Use Additional Resources

You are not required to put all of your eggs in one basket. Continue your job search on your own while you wait for a response from the agency. Examine job boards and job search engines, and make connections with individuals in your sector. However, be honest with your recruiter—tell him or her if you apply to positions on your own and if you work with another staffing firm. This prevents your recruiter from submitting you for a position that you have previously applied for (in some cases, an employer will remove your application if he or she sees it twice).

Prepare for Your New Job

When you obtain an assignment, the agency will tell you of who to report to, the dress code, hours, salary, and a description of the job's tasks and length. You may also be required to have a second interview with the organization. If you do not get all of this information, request it from the agency.

You Have the Right to Refuse

If you honestly believe a job is not a good match for you—perhaps the hours are inconvenient for you, or the salary is well below what you require—be honest with the recruiter. Explain to him or her why you are not interested in the job. It will assist the recruiter in finding you a better-fitting position in the future.
