Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) is a payment provided to jobless persons who are actively seeking for employment.
If you are: - actively searching for work or working less than 16 hours per week - over 18 but under the State Pension age - living in England, Scotland, or Wales - you may claim JSA.
If you are jobless but not actively looking for employment, you may be eligible for Income Support or, if ill or handicapped, Employment and Support Allowance. For further information, check the Income Support eligibility conditions or the Employment and Support Allowance eligibility criteria.
JSAs are classified into two types: contribution-based and income-based.
Contribution-based Jobseekers Allowance is available for up to 6 months if you paid adequate Class 1 National Insurance payments while working. Even if your spouse works or you have funds, you can obtain it. The calculator cannot determine if you are eligible for contribution-based JSA.
Income-based JSA is payable if you have not made enough National Insurance payments or if your contribution-based JSA is no longer available. It may also supplement contribution-based JSA. It may be paid for as long as you continue to follow the regulations.
If you get JSA (income-based benefits), you may be eligible for assistance with the cost of your mortgage and other home loans. More information may be found at housing assistance.
