To categorize employment, the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system (occupations) are utilized. Jobs are classified according to their nature.
Responsibilities at work
The primary employment groupings for immigration purposes are:
Management positions, such as restaurant managers, mine managers, and shore captains, need Skill Type 0 (zero) (fishing)
Skill Level A: professional vocations that often need a university degree, such as physicians, dentists, and architects.
Skill Level B: technical vocations and skilled trades that often need a college education or apprenticeship training, such as cooks, plumbers, and electricians.
Skill Level C: professions that need a high school diploma and/or job-specific training, such as industrial butchers.

Skill Level D: manual labor positions that often include on-the-job training, such as fruit pickers, cleaning staff, and oil field employees.
The NOC is used by our immigration programs to determine if a job or kind of work experience fits their eligibility requirements. Jobs with NOC Skill Type 0, A, or B are considered "skilled."
