The Most Common and Rarest Jobs In The U.S.

If you don't work in one of these industries, it's likely that you haven't crossed paths with very many animal breeders, radio operators, or prosthodontists in your career. If that's the case, the likelihood of you knowing a private home cook is much lower.

According to the Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the United States, these are some of the occupations that are the least prevalent overall in the country.

The results of the BLS survey represent pay and employment data collected in May 2011 from almost 1.2 million firms in all industrial sectors (for about 800 jobs) throughout the United States. Data from employees who are self-employed are not gathered, thus these individuals are not included into the calculations.

This is the rarest employment there is in the United States, since there are only 370 private home cooks (connected with an establishment) in the whole country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that their typical annual salary is $31,080. In the United States, the average salary for all jobs comes in at $45,230 a year.

The second most unusual occupation is that of a prosthodontist. There are only 560 of these dental professionals that are dedicated to repairing and replacing teeth currently in practice in the United States. They make, on average, $130,820 a year, while those in the top 10 percent of earners bring in more than $185,000 annually.

Radio operator is another occupation that is incredibly rare, as there are only 1,220 of them in the United States. They comply with the rules set down by the government in order to receive and send messages utilizing radiotelephone equipment, and as a result, they earn an annual salary of around $45,190.

According to the statistics provided by the BLS, the total number of animal breeders in the nation is just 1,460. They breed animals according to the ancestry, qualities, and offspring of the animals, which results in an annual average income of $37,670.

There is a good chance that there are vocations that are even less prevalent than these, but if the BLS tried to locate such professions using their technique, it would be practically difficult for them to succeed.

The position of retail salesman is the one held by the most people. The average annual salary for retail salespeople is $25,130, which equates to an hourly wage of $12.08.

There are 3,314,870 cashiers in the nation because businesses need staff to ring up those purchases, which is why there are so many cashiers. They earn, on average, $9.73 per hour, which equates to around $20,230 per year.

The position of general office clerk is the third most popular one. All 2,828,140 of these professionals, as stated by the BLS, carry out responsibilities that are "too wide and diversified to be categorized in any one office clerical vocation, requiring knowledge of office systems and processes."
