Obtaining one's credentials as a town planner

In order to pursue a career as a town planner, you will likely need further education on top of your undergraduate degree as well as experience working in a related field.


Qualifications

In order to become a chartered town planner, which is highly recommended, you will need to have finished a degree that has been certified by the Royal Town Planning Institut

Even if your degree is not included in this list, it is still feasible to get chartered status by finishing a postgraduate program that is recognized by the relevant authorities. For the most part, moving on to these postgraduate credentials requires having a bachelor's degree, and having that degree in geography is often regarded useful.


Practice in the workplace

Experience gained prior to entrance is preferred in the field of town planning. Employment experience that is relevant might include vacation job in the planning department of a local government or with a consultancy, work shadowing with a planner, experience of interacting with the general public, or administrative experience, particularly in a local authority setting.

It is quite probable that, in order to be considered for positions in this industry, you will be required to provide proof of the following:

Become a student member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) if you are thinking about pursuing a career as a chartered town planner. This will provide you with access to publications and their library, membership in networks, and the opportunity to take part in the institute's activities. If you are interested in becoming a chartered town planner, it may be worthwhile for you to do so. Alongside the completion of your degree, this may also be of assistance to you in getting suitable job experience.
