Overview of the Position
Students who are enrolled in special education should be given educational opportunities and experiences that are meant to assist them in reaching their full potential in terms of intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. Create or alter the curriculum, then tailor the lessons, as well as any other instructional materials, to the varying skill levels of the students. Perform duties in an independent, team, or departmental capacity, or in an itinerant capacity, depending on the task at hand.
Position Requirements
Education/Certification/License:
Bachelor's degree from an academically reputable institution
Certificate of Education from the State of Texas that is Current and Has All Required Endorsements or Training for Subject and Level Assigned
a proven level of mastery in the fundamental academic field that is being evaluated
Experience:
One year of student teaching or an internship that has been authorized
Exceptional Know-How and Abilities:
A familiarity with the unique requirements of the pupils in the designated region
A familiarity with the procedure followed by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee as well as the Individual Education Plan (IEP) objective development procedure and execution
A general familiarity with educational programs and methods.
Duties/Responsibilities
Instructional Methods and Procedures
Work together with the children, their parents, and other members of the staff to design an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student who has been assigned to you.
Carry out an educational, therapeutic, or skill development program for the pupils who have been allocated to you, and present documented proof of having prepared as necessary.
Prepare and implement suitable instructional and learning techniques, activities, resources, and equipment, taking into account the learning styles and requirements of the students to whom you have been allocated.
Help special education students who are enrolled in normal classrooms with their homework by working together with the instructors of those classes to adapt the regular curriculum to the specific needs of the students.
Maintain a consistent attendance record for the meetings of the ARD Committee.
Conduct an evaluation of the students' preferred modes of learning, and utilize the findings to inform the development of instructional activities.
IEP standards require that the material be presented in accordance with certain standards.
Utilize a wide range of teaching strategies and different types of media in order to cater to the requirements and potential of each individual student.
Create and oversee the completion of tasks for the classroom assistant(s) and volunteer(s) (s).
Integrate technological tools into the teaching and learning process.
The Growth and Development of Students
Carry out continuous evaluations of the academic progress of the students, using both official and informal examination methods.
As outlined in the IEP, you are responsible for providing or supervising the students' personal care, medical care, and eating needs.
Accept the responsibilities that come with participating in extracurricular activities. Sponsor extracurricular activities that have been approved by the campus administrator.
Maintain a good example for the pupils, and show support for the mission of the school system.
Classroom Administration and Classroom Organization
Establish a learning atmosphere in the classroom that is suitable for the students' growth in all aspects of their being, including their bodies, their social lives, and their emotions.
Manage the conduct of the students and impose appropriate consequences. This involves acting in crisis situations and physically restraining pupils as required in accordance with their individualized education programs (IEP).
Have a discussion with the instructors in charge of the classroom on how to handle student behavior in accordance with the IEP.
When addressing the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of kids, it is important to consult both district and outside resource personnel.
It is imperative that all measures, both required and reasonable, be taken to ensure the safety of the students, equipment, and facilities.
Help pick educational materials such as books, equipment, and other reading and viewing resources.
Communication
Conducting conferences with parents, students, administrators, and teachers is a great way to get open communication going and to keep it going.
Always remember to keep your interactions with coworkers, students, parents, and members of the community on a professional level.
Make sure you deliver the material in a way that is understandable and factual by using your communication abilities.
Other
Take part in staff development programs to strengthen your abilities that are relevant to your work.
It is important for instructors of special education to both be up to date on and abide by all applicable federal, state, district, and school rules and procedures.
It is necessary to compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and other documents, whether they are physical or digital.
Attend and take part in faculty meetings, as well as volunteer to serve on staff committees as necessary.
