As a traffic accident investigator, one of your primary responsibilities will be to conduct in-depth investigations of motor vehicle collisions. You will need to gather evidence, such as photographs and videos, as well as testimonies from witnesses and reports from experts, in order to determine what took place during the accident.

In a police traffic unit, for an insurance business, or for a law firm, you may work using 3D visualization software or "skid testing" tools; alternatively, you might do this kind of job. You can also be required to visit other crime sites, such as investigations involving murder or arson.


DAY-TO-DAY DUTIES

Investigating automobiles and their component components

Developing blueprints of the area and doing measurements of both time and distance

Figuring out the speed of the car by calculating the amount of crush damage

Verifying the information on the tachographs of vehicles

Obtaining technical information from the many manufacturers of vehicles

Creating reports as needed

In the capacity of an expert witness


DAY-TO-DAY ENVIRONMENT

The hours you put in at work could change based on the job you play. You will work from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while you are office-based. In order to fulfill the deadlines, you may need to put in some additional hours of effort. When you are working at an accident site, you will be expected to work the hours that are specified by your employer. This might include working nights and weekends, as well as working on a shift schedule. You'll need to be available at all times. Your place of employment could put a lot of emotional strain on you.


YOU'LL NEED

Someone with an inquisitive mind and problem-solving abilities, the ability to analyze and compare data, a systematic approach to obtaining evidence, mathematics and IT skills would be suitable for this post.

You may be able to be hired for this position if you took a class offered by De Montfort University in collaboration with AiTS. Courses include those leading to a Foundation Degree in Forensic Road Collision Investigation as well as a University Certificate of Professional Development (UCPD) in Forensic Road Collision Investigation. If you want to become a forensic road crash investigator but have no previous experience investigating road incidents, getting the qualification is the first step you need to do. The next step in your education would be the foundation degree. You have the option to "top-up" to the BSc (Hons) Professional Studies in Forensic Road Collision Investigation after you have completed the foundation degree. Qualifications may be obtained on a part-time basis using a combination of online study and classroom instruction in order to meet the requirements.

If you have the necessary credentials and many years of experience in the fields of engineering, technical testing, or health and safety, you may also be eligible to apply for a position as an investigator.

You may also become a member of the police force, either as an officer or as a member of the civilian support staff, and work in a road policing department. At the same time, you would be gaining certifications in traffic crash investigation while you were on the job.

There are independent training programs available for those interested in pursuing a career in road traffic investigation; however, it is essential to ensure that the program you choose has been validated by an established awarding organization or educational establishment.

Joining The Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (ITAI) in order to get professional recognition and access to educational opportunities is something that can be beneficial.
