What's it like?

You would be responsible for the construction and maintenance of railway engines and carriages, allowing passengers to travel in a manner that is both secure and convenient.

You would be responsible for the installation, inspection, and maintenance of the mechanical and electrical components of various railway vehicles, including train engines, passenger carriages, and other vehicles.


In such case:

Contribute to the construction of new locomotives and carriages.

Upholstery, lighting, control panels, and communication systems should be installed in any newly constructed carriages.

Examine the bodywork, roofs, and undercarriages for any signs of damage or wear and tear.

Fix or replace the broken components.

Wherever it is essential, make new pieces.

Carry out routine inspections of systems such as the brakes and the connections.

Perform inspections on the mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components.

Create reports, and keep the maintenance logs up to date.


You would use a variety of hand and power tools, including welding equipment, for the majority of the duties. You would adhere to the technical plans that had been drafted by more experienced technicians or engineers.

You would collaborate closely with other artisans including carpenters, painters, upholsterers, and sheet metal craftsmen, among others.

It would be beneficial to have knowledge on the quality standards and safe working procedures that are prevalent within the sector.



Conditions of employment

Hours

You would work around 37 hours per week, often following a shift schedule that may entail working on the weekends or on bank holidays.


Environment

Although you could have some responsibilities outdoors, you would spend the most of your time working in an engineering workshop or a train terminal. Your company will give you with protective clothes if the work you are doing has the potential to become highly filthy. In addition to this, there is a stringent regulation against the use of drugs and alcohol. There is always the possibility that you may be given a test for drugs or alcohol.


Travel

If your shifts start outside of the typical hours when public transportation is available, you may be required to have a driver's license and access to a car.
