Introduction
Qualification Courses that are accredited by the British Association of Play Therapists are at the post-graduate level, and it is customary for trainees to hold a first qualification in either teaching, social work, occupational therapy, or another field that is related to play therapy, in addition to having a significant amount of experience working with children.
There are three prerequisites that must be met in order to participate:
- academic credentials - A bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as Psychology, Education, Early Childhood Studies, Mental Health (Psychiatric) Nursing, or Social Work, etc.
credentials in a relevant professional field, such as teaching, nursing, social work, visual art, drama, performing arts, occupational therapy, or probation officers
- work experience – a minimum of five years' worth of work experience in a sector that is relevant to the position.
Both individual psychotherapy and practice under supervision are necessary components of the program.
The following programs have been approved by the Association and are thus acknowledged by the BAPT as satisfying the requirements for Full membership and as offering a certification to work in the field.

The University of Roehampton
Master's Degree in Play Therapy
Students enrolled in the Play Therapy Master's program will follow a course of study designed to get them ready for clinical work in either the public or private sector of the occupational field. Students who are able to complete the Master of Arts in Play Therapy program with a passing grade will be eligible to register with the British Association of Play Therapists as full members (BAPT)
The current training program is comprised of nine different modules that provide students with the necessary theoretical, practical, and experiential learning opportunities to become certified Play Therapists. The redesigned program is now spread out over the course of two full years, with attendance on the university campus required two days per week (Mondays and Tuesdays) for the first five terms. In addition, there are additional components that take place away from the university campus, each of which requires at least one additional day of time commitment. The students will be prepared for therapeutic practice that is both intellectually sound and emotionally aware by the time they have completed the course.
The program is centered on the person-centered approach, and its goal is to provide students with the skills necessary to work effectively with a wide range of issues pertaining to children's mental health. The clear and consistent theoretical underpinnings that Roehampton provides are one of the school's strengths, since these foundations have an impact on each and every course that is offered in the program.
Students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Play Therapy program are given the chance to do research and investigate particular or broad aspects of play therapy theory and practice, including the following:
1. The Growth and Development of People
2. Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Play Therapy 1
3. Placement 1 (including Placement Preparation and inhouse small group supervision)
4. Observation of Children
5. The Group for the Process
6. Placement 2
7. Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Play Therapy 2: Collaborating with a variety of customer subsets
8. The Role of Play Therapy in Its Setting
9. Research Methods and Portfolio: This module is the culmination of the Masters Program and is designed to provide students with a critical understanding of research methodology, as well as to enable them to plan, design, and carry out a research project, as well as to write a research dissertation. It is also designed to provide students with the opportunity to build a research portfolio.
Throughout the course of the program, each student is expected to participate in personal treatment and to complete a number of different short- and medium-term supervised play therapy assignments.
Research Towards a Doctorate
Play therapy is an active participant in the vibrant research community that is housed within the School of Psychology and Therapeutic Studies. Students have the option to continue their education and get a PhD after completing a highly in-depth research dissertation.
