Modelers create three-dimensional (3D) scale models (also known as mock-ups) for the goal of gaining an idea of how something will appear in the future or for testing reasons. This may be for a brand-new piece of real estate, such as a retail center, or it could be for a brand-new piece of technology, such as a mobile phone. They could also construct models to demonstrate scientific concepts or to be used for special effects in movies or on television.
The Work Being Done
It's possible that:
having a conversation with the customer or the designer about the needs, including the money and the timeframes
the process of creating three-dimensional items by working with sketches, pictures, computer images, or full technical requirements
using computer-aided design (CAD) tools in addition to other specialized applications
using components such as plaster, wood, metal, clay, plastic, cardboard, and resin in one's work.
employing both hand tools and electronic equipment, as well as other processes, such as manufacturing and casting molds, laser cutting, soldering, and 3D printing
modifying the size of the model such that it is either smaller (for example, a bridge) or bigger (for example, a molecule) than the real thing.
constructing a demonstrative model, with or without the use of color and detail
constructing a model that functions or is mechanical, complete with moving elements
modeling the surrounding landscape in an architectural model to demonstrate how a building integrates with its environment is an important part of the process.
You may choose to specialize in architectural modeling, product modeling (the job description for a Product Designer is similar in some ways), or visual effects modeling (also see the job profiles for Prop Maker and Scenic Artist).
Pay
The following numbers should only be used as a reference. The actual salary may vary based on the following factors:
where you make a living
the magnitude of the business or organization for which you work.
the level of competition for the job.
The starting salary for model makers in the UK is often about £18,000, and they may earn up to around $24,000 annually. Model makers with experience may make up to or even more than £40,000 per year. However, the majority of model makers are self-employed. They ask for a fee, the amount of which varies according on the task and the reputation of the company. In certain circumstances, the level of revenue is not very high. The more well-known they are, the higher prices they are able to command.
Conditions
You may get employment with a business that specializes in model making, one that designs products, one that manufactures goods, or one that does civil engineering. Another option is for you to go into business for yourself and engage in freelancing employment.
You might be assigned to work in a studio, laboratory, or workshop.
There is a possibility that the working conditions may be loud and dirty.
It's possible that some of the items you'd employ might release vapors that are both unpleasant and perhaps harmful.
It is possible that you may need to put on protective gear as well as gloves and a mask.
The hours may be lengthy and unpredictable at times, and in order to meet deadlines, you may need to put in some extra effort on the evenings and weekends.
It's possible that you'll need to travel to meet with customers at times.
Getting In
There is not one single point of entrance. There are modelmaking courses available at a variety of levels; nevertheless, it is possible to enter the field after completing an introductory course in general design, such as 3D or product design.
Both a National Qualification in Modelmaking for TV and Film and a Higher National Diploma in 3D Design: Modelmaking for the Creative Industries are available to students at City of Glasgow College.
You must pass two courses at the National 5 level, one of which must be English. The other subjects must be Art and Design, Design and Manufacture, or Graphic Communication. You must have an impressive body of work to showcase.
You require one Higher from Art and Design, Design and Manufacture, or Graphic Communication in addition to English at the National 5 level to be eligible for the HND; alternatively, you may take the NQ Modelmaking for TV and Film. You also need to have an impressive portfolio of your previous design work.
In Scotland, there are no degree programs available in modelmaking; however, there are several degree programs available in 3D design and product design. It is possible to get a degree in modelmaking or a degree with a specialty option in the field if you study in England.
Having expertise in computer-aided design (CAD) might be beneficial.
The areas surrounding big cities, notably London and the south of England, are where model makers find the majority of their job opportunities.
