Entry requirements (mental health nursing)

There is information about the prerequisites for entering the field of mental health nursing on this page.

Instruction at a university

The prerequisite courses and GPA needed to enroll in a mental health nursing program are determined by each individual school. To be eligible for an undergraduate degree, you will typically need a minimum of five GCSEs, each with a grade of 4 or higher (typically including English language or literature and a science subject), in addition to a minimum of two (and ideally three) A-levels or other qualifications that are equivalent to level 3 work. If you already hold a bachelor's degree, you could be eligible to enroll in an accelerated program that will allow you to get a postgraduate certification more quickly.

Options other than the A-levels

Be aware that the entrance criteria for each university programme are determined independently by the individual universities before you submit your application. It is essential that you review the unique entrance criteria of the institutions that you want to apply to since the requirements might differ from one institution to another.

Before submitting an application to any university, you need to make sure that your credentials are up to par with the requirements set out by that institution.

Utilizing our Course finder will allow you to discover which educational institutions provide clinical programs that have been granted approval. You may find comprehensive information on entrance criteria on university websites, and admissions offices are always available to answer questions over the phone.

There are several other certifications that may be considered acceptable replacements for A-levels. These are the following:

The Highers and Advanced Highers of Scotland

Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma qualifications

Cambridge Technical Examinations from OCR

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Access programs, such as the Access to Nursing program

In order to meet the requirements for these alternative credentials, you may need to get a particular grade, such as a merit or distinction in the case of BTEC. In some circumstances, one may be able to combine their academic credentials with their professional credentials. For instance, you may have both an Advanced Placement (A-level) and a Basic Technical Certificate (BTEC), and depending on the courses you studied and your grade point average, institutions may recognize this combination of credentials.

Other academic and occupational credentials not listed here may also be accepted; however, you should get in touch with the institutions of your choice for further information and guidance.

Always verify with the institutions of your choice before beginning an Access course to confirm that the qualification you will be pursuing will be an acceptable admission criterion.

Help with expenses throughout one's time spent getting a university education

If you are qualified, the government will contribute at least £6,000 to your education each year while you are attending college. It's possible that because of your unique circumstances, you may get more. What's the good news, you ask? You won't ever be required to make a repayment for it.

Alternative ways to enter the field of mental health nursing

Some firms provide their employees with the opportunity to complete nursing degree apprenticeships. Additionally, the number of chances for already employed healthcare support personnel to apply for nursing associate apprenticeships, which may eventually lead to nursing degree apprenticeships, will increase.
