Position Description
Installing, upgrading, servicing, and repairing elevators and escalators is the responsibility of lift engineers.
They respond to emergency breakdowns, verify that health and safety rules are followed, and prepare risk assessments, legal, and insurance documentation.
Required Entry Routes and Competencies
Apprenticeship
5 A*-C (or numerical equivalent) GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Maths, Science, and Technology subjects
Qualifications or Experience
Mechanical, electronic, and building services engineering are examples of such subjects.
Certificates and diplomas at the second level
National Higher Diplomas (HND)
National Higher Certificates (HNC)
A full driver's license may be required by some employers.
Salary Scale
Salaries differ depending on experience, company, and employment location. However, you can expect to earn the following per year:
Installer with no experience - £18,000 - £22,000
Installer with experience - £25,000 - £30,000
£35,000 for an expert installer
Professional Development and Qualifications
It is possible to advance to supervisory or management positions, as well as technical sales and engineering design.
Moving into other businesses or technical specialties, such as building services or electrical engineering, is also an option.
Working as a freelance contractor or as part of a firm are both options.
The Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) and CIBSE both offer membership.
