You have the option of pursuing either a Level 2 or Level 3 Certificate of Proficiency in Fish and Shellfish Industry Skills.

A more broad retail programme, such as a Level 2 Diploma in Retail Skills, is another option for you to consider.

Entry requirements

In most cases, you will require:

For a level 2 programme, you will need at least two GCSEs, or their equivalent, with marks ranging from 9 to 3 (A* to D).

For a level 3 programme, you will need either four or five GCSEs with marks ranging from 9 to 4 (A* to C), or an equivalent.

Work

You might begin at a fishmonger's shop or on a fish counter in a supermarket as a sales assistant and work your way up by learning from more experienced members of the staff as you progress through the ranks.

Competence and familiarity

You'll need:

to do one's work completely and with careful attention to detail.

familiarity with the production methods and procedures of manufacturing

Day-to-day duties

During the course of a regular day, you could:

receive delivery from suppliers

transfer of merchandise to and from regions containing cold storage

put the vegetables on display in the display cases.

Informing consumers about the many kinds of fish and the various techniques of preparing seafood

prepare orders for clients in the business and at nearby restaurants.

Maintain a clean working environment.

Place your orders with the wholesalers.

Working environment

You may get employment at a shop or at a stand in a market.
