Both positive and negative aspects of being a driving teacher
After working in the field for the last 20 years, I feel qualified to provide an objective assessment of the benefits and drawbacks associated with being a driving teacher.
Do not allow the negative aspects of the work dissuade you from pursuing it altogether. If you're seeking for a job that's wonderful in every way but doesn't come with any negatives, you'll never find it.
I would want to make it clear that I do not consider what I am doing here to be a work since I like it so much, which is the most important factor in being able to take pleasure in anything. Find a career that you are passionate about, and you'll never have to put in a day's labor in your life.
After you've finished reading, please check out my page entitled "The truth about becoming a Driving Instructor." If you decide to become a driving teacher, you may find it interesting to read the tales on the page that I have dedicated to humorous incidents that have occurred during driving lessons.
The advantages of having a career as a driving teacher
Since you are the boss, you may work whenever you want to, rather than when someone else instructs you to do so.
You can alter peoples lives. If you teach them how to drive, they'll have more opportunities to spend time with their families, find better jobs, and be more self-sufficient overall.
You are the proprietor of your own company. Feeling independent and secure in the knowledge that you own your own business is a wonderful sensation.
The potential earnings might be quite high. You should have no trouble earning $25 an hour, and it is possible that your income will be substantially greater even after deducting expenditures.
After obtaining your ADI certification, you may pursue several other career paths, including expanding your own driving school, becoming an ADI trainer, launching websites that provide assistance to students, advanced training, and fleet training (visiting companies and training company drivers to be safer etc.). This is in no way a hopeless line of work.
You may always have the newest form or model automobiles with all of the latest technology and features available to you.
You have the chance to interact with a large number of interesting individuals, each of whom has a unique background and set of qualities. Your students will remember you for the rest of their life; it's certain that they'll never forget their first driving teacher.
If you put a sign on the top of your vehicle, it will be simple to spot it in the parking lot.
The downsides of having a career as a driving teacher
You are going to get into vehicle accidents. If you spend every day in a vehicle with individuals who are unable to drive, then the question of whether or not something bad will happen to you is replaced with the question of when something bad will happen.
You should expect some revolting students every once in a while. There have been individuals in my life whose demeanor is so poor that you wouldn't believe me if I told you the things that they have said. Individuals who have never driven before yet believe they know everything about driving will be among the people you encounter. You may come across students who are verbally abusive, suffer from very foul breath or body odor, and purposefully try to wreck the automobile because they believe it would be hilarious to do so. They are quite uncommon, although it is possible to find one. My training as an ADI requires me to instruct you on how to avoid encountering issues like these.
When you're behind the wheel of a vehicle, you're always balancing on a tightrope. It just takes one error, like driving too fast, for you to completely wipe out your company.
There are never any assurances about your revenue. There may be months in which you make £2,500, and there may be months in which you earn just £500. The terrible winter that we had in 2010 forced a number of teachers to shut their businesses.
It is a really difficult situation. Every day, you're going to have to deal with road rage incidents and inconsiderate drivers. You can't go more than a few days without someone honking their horn at you or yelling insults out the window because you're taking too long to move.
You need to be multi-skilled. You will not only need to have experience as a driving teacher, but you will also need to be able to construct and maintain websites, promote your business, keep financial records (even if you have an accountant), and do more tasks.
A few introductory thoughts about the profession of driving teacher
To be successful as a driving teacher, you will need to have a kind demeanor and the ability to get along with people of all walks of life. There are going to be those individuals in your life whose viewpoints and attitudes you fundamentally disagree with. Some people won't speak much English, while others could be from other nations and have distinct cultural perspectives or standards of behavior.
During the course of your employment as a driving teacher, you are likely to come into contact with a diverse range of individuals. I have experience teaching a wide variety of people, including "regular" kinds like students, nurses, physicians, and performers. Then there are some that are a little less prevalent, such as those who make a living as escorts, lap dancers, professional poker players, or drug traffickers. There are occasions when you really regret having inquired about the person's line of work.
There is a legislation that states only certified driving instructors are allowed to teach individuals how to drive for money. The only exception to this rule is for police officers who need to educate reckless drivers who they have pulled over. The regulations on this matter are quite stringent, and you are not permitted to receive any kind of compensation for driving lessons. People will attempt to get around this by claiming that they are paying for your time rather than tuition, or that you are educating them in exchange for them painting your home, or anything else along those lines. It is against the law to receive any kind of payment for teaching someone how to drive if you are not a certified driving instructor. If you are caught, you may face hefty fines and perhaps time in jail.
This indicates that almost everyone is required to take part in driver education. It's possible that famous people may call you on the phone. It is possible that when you show up for a class, you will find out that you are teaching a renowned person who prefers to stay nameless.
The kind of occurrences that are possible for driving instructors to experience
Once upon a time, I was told a narrative that I believe to be true, but I am unable to verify it. They said that an instructor took a call to arrange a class in Scotland, and when they arrived there were a number of guys dressed in suits waiting for them. They revealed to him that a renowned person had requested instruction, but that the request had been kept under wraps for reasons of security. After then, Madonna got in the vehicle. That would be the renowned vocalist.
The guys were her bodyguards, and it is my understanding that they accompanied her on the lesson as well. You may recall that when she married Guy Ritchie she went to Scotland and apparently wanted to take driving lessons in order to feel more comfortable on the roads there. As I've said before, it's possible that this isn't real, but I seem to recall hearing it many years ago, and events like this certainly are capable of taking place.
Be careful to let your insurers know if you're working with a renowned person. Imagine what would happen if a well-known football player was involved in an accident that resulted in a broken leg and put an end to their career.
