What Duties Does a Cycling Coach Have to Fulfill?

If you are new to cycling and have been told that you should acquire a coach, there is a good possibility that you have found yourself wondering, "But what does a cycling coach do?" To that question, there are a variety of responses available: When working with elite athletes, coaches may accompany them to training camps, ride beside them or motorpace them on scooters, stand on a track and calculate splits while handing them water bottles, or any combination of these activities. It's possible that the only thing a cycling coach will do for you is create a workout schedule for you, and the relationship will end there. A bicycle coach could devise a strategy, keep tabs on its progress, and provide periodic commentary. A cycling coach may provide individual instruction to help you improve your abilities on the bike, or they may organize a training camp that you may participate in. The list of services provided by a cycling coach might vary greatly from one coach to another and from riding style to riding style, in contrast to the more clear services provided by a personal trainer. Because of the potential for misunderstanding, we at The Consummate Athlete wanted to discuss the many approaches to coaching that we use.



Cycling instructor available online

Online coaching, as opposed to a straightforward training plan that only outlines the distance, duration, and intensity of your rides. An online cycling coach would often construct a training program for you on a program such as Training Peaks. If there isn't a feedback or adjustment protocol, you're basically paying for a training plan rather than a coach. Online coaching typically includes plan adjustments and regular feedback from your coach based on how you're performing and what's going on in your life. If there isn't a feedback or adjustment protocol, online coaching isn't for you. A skilled coach will analyze the data that you provide from your exercises and make adjustments to your training regimen in order to accommodate the improvement that you make. Here, coaches will use a variety of contact types and ranges of contact depending on the situation: For instance, Peter provides three distinct levels of coaching: daily, weekly, and monthly. Each of these levels is connected with a different degree of plan change and client engagement. And depending on who your coach is, you may be able to communicate with them by email, SMS, a reply inside the app you're using, or even the phone at specific points in the process. (Here's a helpful hint: If you haven't worked with a coach before, have an interview with one first and determine the kind of communication that works best for the two of you.)


Cycling Training Plans

The execution of these plans will be less complicated. You may either have one that is entirely pre-made and ready to go, or you can get one that is constructed with your present objectives and limits (both physically and in terms of job, family, and time) in mind. These may be a terrific method to get started in coaching for someone who is self-disciplined and highly motivated since they allow you to have a feeling of what training on a plan looks and feels like for you. (It may also assist you in determining what it is that you need from a coach!)


Bike Skills Sessions

Bike skills are one of the most important aspects that we focus on when it comes to cycling coaching, despite the fact that they are often disregarded by other cycling coaches. Peter has been teaching people how to ride bicycles for more than a decade, and even after all this time, it remains one of his favorite things to do. When we speak about coaching cyclists, we often neglect to include the skills component: Even while online training is beneficial for many athletes, there are still a huge number of athletes (including those who are already working with another coach online) who may benefit from some in-person work on their abilities. The majority of trainers are now located online. Having skills training in addition to a scheduled program is quite helpful, and this is especially true if you are thinking about competing in an off-road discipline like as cyclocross or mountain biking.


Camps / Clinics

Similar to bike skills workshops, but with the added benefit of having friends tag along! These alternatives are wonderful methods to refine abilities over the course of a single day or over a number of days while putting in some terrific miles on the bike and consulting with a coach about any and all aspects of training. If you are fresh to organized training, these are excellent methods to gain abilities and begin to comprehend what the organization of your daily training should look like, all while boosting your fitness level.
