Qualifications
You will need to have a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field, such as geography, in order to qualify for this job. Consider include them in your list of optional courses if you are pursuing a degree that includes cartographic or GIS components. These degrees will offer you a head start in application development.
A course in cartography, remote sensing, photogrammetry, digital mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), or surveying may also be advantageous if you want to pursue postgraduate education. There is a possibility that this will boost your chances of landing a job, but it is not always required.
Employers might ask for a portfolio of maps as part of the application process. This portfolio could be developed as part of your degree program or via related job experience.
Practice in the workplace
It is often rather difficult to break into the competitive area of cartography. Therefore, even if prior job experience is not required, gaining practical experience via work placements may put you at an edge over other applicants.
Alternately, you could get your foot in the door of the business by beginning at a lower-level position and working your way up from there. This would enable you to get experience and move through the ranks. Some cartographers begin their careers as mapping technicians and then transition into the field of cartography after completing further on-the-job and in-house training.
You may find it helpful to become a member of the Society of Cartographers or the British Cartographic Society if you want to network and stay up with the latest trends and advancements in the industry.
