The assertions that there is "no scarcity of employment" in the United Kingdom have been investigated by the Reality Check blog. These claims were made by Conservative minister Maria Miller, who said that job centers now have more than 400,000 open positions. The evidence that has been presented up to this point has put doubt on Miller's claims:
Miller is accurate in stating that there are around 400,000 jobs available in the United Kingdom, according to the most recent official numbers that were provided by the Office of National Statistics in the month of January. Employers were searching for 463,000 new employees between the months of October and December; however, this is around 18,000 less than they were looking for the previous year.
The problem with Miller's line of reasoning is that the very same numbers show that there is also a sizeable population that is interested in pursuing such careers. The number of persons who are considered to be officially jobless in the United States is 2.68 million. This includes those who are actively seeking for employment and are ready to begin working right away if they are hired.
That works out to around six potential candidates for each available position throughout the nation. Even if we limit ourselves to those who are presently claiming jobseeker's aid, there are still four people competing for each available position in the workforce. There are now one million individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 who are seeking for jobs.
No matter what metric you use, there just aren't enough open positions to satisfy the demand created by the number of people who are actively seeking employment.
The Trades Union Conference, which serves as the umbrella organization for all of the UK's unions, has provided its statistics on the number of job openings and people looking for work in each local authority in the UK. According to their findings, there are around 35 people applying for each position that is open in Lewisham, but in South Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, and the City of London, there were less than two people applying for each position.
